I've drawn some typography for the film poster. I'm not sure if I'll add one of the astronauts or planets or stars. I'll just leave it like this for a while.

Apparently, 2 of my film's scenes happened in real life last week. The astronauts take notes as they measure Mars' gravity. The North Koreans take notes as the Supreme Leader learns them how to dance. On Mars, a show gets shot as meat is a great resource for vitamins B12, iron and creatine. In Germany, 2 loose cows get shot in the head in a supermarket because they were "wild and dangerous".
ProgressAudio: The Voice-Over has been recorded in the studio and the soundscape has been made. I've started recording smaller sounds as well. I'll start making the audio track soon. Probably after I finish my keyframes and make a rough animation so I have a better view on how long every scene will take.
Visual: I've drawn about 85% of the keyframes. They're all nicely separated in layers so the animation should go quick. I've also finished the visual style for the background, which can be seen in the next image. It's the only finished background so far, so I guess the most visual work I still have to do is in the backgrounds. In search of the visual styleStill not there yet, but I think I'm close. I like the bright colours next to the browns and whites in the first picture. Main problem is that I think it's hard to get this visual style into different kind of shots.
I'm also not a fan of using textures from a picture in the background. The second one is quite a bit too dark to fit in with the movie. I've also learned that I should use a thinner brush when drawing my astronauts, so I'll have to do a few over. The feeling of depth really isn't what it should be either. All backgrounds have been sketched in pencil at the right size. I'll finish them digitally once I've figured out how they're supposed to look.
ProgressI started all over again with my voice-over. I think it 's more clear and more entertaining now. As you can see in the image, I'm not there yet, but I think I'm close.
I've also animated 1 out of 11 scenes and drew the keyframes for 3 more scenes. The voice-over should be recorded by the end of the month. Animatic: https://vimeo.com/153353123
Password: Apollo This is the animatic I’ve shown to Geert van Goethem and Johan Verzyck. I think I’m almost there, but the feedback has got me thinking about the ending. Geert seemed to think the progress was going OK, although he said the visual style will have to be very interesting. Johan also said this, but added that the ending was unclear: it seems that the flying into the sun was just one of the many actions they perform that we see throughout the movie. It should be way more obvious that the protagonist leaves Mars because he/she has had enough, and that he/she flies into the sun because he/she has had enough. Not by adding extra scenes, but by literally saying so. He also wasn’t convinced that I should use multiple voice-actors for the voice-over, as it sounds that the text was written to be read by a single person. I think I’ll still record two voice-overs, one male and one female, and experiment with the final sounds, seeing what will fit best. If it doesn’t work, I’ll just use one of them. I completely agree that if the ending is unclear, I should make it more clear, so all viewers will immediately understand. Hearing the sun very loudly as we see our Martians become the centre of the human world, seemed like a nice and fitting ending. I think replacing the sun's sounds with “ah shit, everyone’s doing this”, will make it a bit of a joke and anti-climatic. So the current plan is to rewrite a part of the last paragraph to make it more clear that our protagonist is leaving the second planet in search for ultimate individuality on a third planet, which we will then see, is the sun: the planet in the center of them all. This way, the last scene remains unchanged and hopefully, will clear things out. In one of my first presentations about this project, I briefly talked about some of the most important inspirations and references I'd use. One of these was the NASA Graphics Standards Manual. It's a book with guidelines for designing NASA documents and the depiction of their logo on vehicles. Apparently, NASA uploaded it back in Septembre and it's free for everyone to download.
